Radio Remote Control Clamshell Grab
NG Radio Remote Control Clamshell Grab is a cable-free bulk material handling grab designed for mobile cranes, crawler cranes, harbor cranes and ship cranes. It is suitable for handling sand, gravel, coal, clinker, grain, fertilizer, aggregates, ore, bauxite, pellets, gypsum, biomass and similar bulk materials in ports, terminals, quarries, stockyards and industrial facilities. The grab is engineered with the
NG SmartRope Hydraulic Control System, a cable-free operating technology developed for single-hook crane applications. This system combines crane wire rope closing force with a battery-powered radio controlled closed hydraulic circuit. The grab is lifted and lowered by the crane wire rope. The closing operation is performed by the hoisting movement of the crane, while the opening and controlled discharge operation is performed by the integrated closed hydraulic system, solenoid valve, battery and radio remote receiver. This system does not require an external electric cable, cable reel, crane electric panel, crane hydraulic line, electric motor or hydraulic pump. The grab has its own closed hydraulic oil circuit, hydraulic oil reservoir, central hydraulic cylinder and control valve system integrated on the grab body.
Cable-Free Bulk Material Handling Solution
Radio remote control clamshell grabs are ideal for applications where the crane does not have additional electrical or hydraulic infrastructure. The grab can be connected directly to the crane hook and operated without installing a cable drum system, external power cable or hydraulic hose connection. This makes the system especially practical for rented mobile cranes, ship cranes, harbor cranes and deep working areas where cable management can be difficult. The crane provides the lifting and closing force through the wire rope, while the grab manages opening and controlled discharge through its own battery-powered closed hydraulic control system.
NG SmartRope Hydraulic Control System
NG SmartRope Hydraulic Control System is the operating technology used inside NG radio remote control clamshell grabs. It is not the product name; it defines the cable-free hydraulic control principle of the grab. The system uses the crane wire rope and hoisting movement for closing. Opening and controlled discharge are managed by a battery-powered radio remote control unit, solenoid valve, hydraulic block and closed hydraulic circuit. The hydraulic oil circulates inside the grab’s own hydraulic system. There is no electric motor, no hydraulic pump, no external electric cable, no cable reel and no crane hydraulic line.
NG SmartRope Hydraulic Control System: crane rope powered closing, battery-powered radio hydraulic opening and cable-free bulk handling.
Working Principle
The NG Radio Remote Control Clamshell Grab uses two different operating principles for closing and opening.
Closing is performed by the crane wire rope and hoisting movement, while
opening is controlled by the battery-powered radio remote control system and closed hydraulic circuit.
- The grab is lowered in open position by the crane wire rope.
- The grab lands on the material or ground.
- The crane starts hoisting upward.
- The hoisting movement closes the shells and grips the material.
- The loaded grab is lifted and moved to the discharge point.
- The operator gives the open command by radio remote control.
- The battery-powered solenoid valve activates the hydraulic block.
- The closed hydraulic system allows controlled opening and material discharge.
Important technical note: This system is not designed to close freely in the air like a conventional electro-hydraulic grab. Closing must be performed on the material or ground by the hoisting movement of the crane. Opening and controlled discharge can be performed in the air by radio remote control.
Closed Hydraulic System Without Electric Motor and Pump
The radio remote control clamshell grab has a
closed hydraulic system installed on the grab body. This system includes a central hydraulic cylinder, hydraulic oil reservoir, hydraulic block, solenoid valve, check valves, battery and radio receiver. The hydraulic oil circulates inside the grab’s own hydraulic circuit. There is hydraulic oil and a hydraulic oil reservoir on the grab, but there is no electric motor and no hydraulic pump. The battery does not provide the main closing force. The battery only supplies the radio receiver, solenoid valve and control circuit. The main closing force comes from the crane hoisting movement.
Difference from Electro-Hydraulic Clamshell Grab
A conventional electro-hydraulic clamshell grab normally requires an electric motor, hydraulic pump, power cable, cable reel and crane electrical infrastructure. The radio remote control clamshell grab eliminates these requirements and provides a practical cable-free solution for single-hook crane applications.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does a radio remote control clamshell grab work?
The grab is lowered in open position by the crane wire rope. After the grab lands on the material, the crane hoists upward and the shells close around the material. At the discharge point, the operator gives the open command by radio remote control and the grab opens through its closed hydraulic system.
Is this product an electro-hydraulic clamshell grab?
No. This product is not a conventional cable electro-hydraulic clamshell grab. It does not require an electric motor, hydraulic pump, external electric cable or cable reel. The grab closes by crane hoisting movement and opens by a battery-powered radio controlled closed hydraulic system.
Does the grab have hydraulic cylinders?
Yes. The grab has a central hydraulic cylinder, hydraulic oil reservoir, hydraulic block and closed hydraulic circuit. However, it does not have an electric motor or hydraulic pump. The hydraulic system is used for controlled opening and discharge.
Does the grab have a hydraulic oil tank?
Yes. The grab has its own hydraulic oil reservoir integrated on the grab body. The oil circulates inside the closed hydraulic circuit. No hydraulic oil supply from the crane is required.
Can the grab close in the air?
No. This system is not designed to close freely in the air. Closing must be performed on the material or ground by the hoisting movement of the crane.
Can the grab open in the air?
Yes. At the discharge point, the operator can open the grab by radio remote control. The battery-powered solenoid valve activates the hydraulic block and allows the grab to open in a controlled way.
Can it be used with a mobile crane?
Yes. The radio remote control clamshell grab can be connected directly to the mobile crane hook. Since it does not require a crane hydraulic line, electric cable or cable reel, it is a practical solution for rented mobile crane applications.
What does the battery do?
The battery does not provide the main lifting or closing force. It only supplies power to the radio receiver, solenoid valve and control circuit. The closing force comes from the crane wire rope and hoisting movement.
Is NG SmartRope the product name?
